Impact Driven Entrepreneur Brandon Fong believes success can grow from meaningful relationships, personal alignment, and a desire to serve others. In this episode, Rob Kosberg talks with Brandon about turning difficult experiences into fuel for growth. They also explore how a book can build credibility, strengthen your network, and open doors to valuable business opportunities.
Turning Your Past Into Forward Momentum
Brandon shares a personal story about growing up without the financial resources of many classmates. Although the experience was painful at the time, he eventually learned to view it differently. Instead of treating his past as something to hide, Brandon reframed it as part of what inspired his entrepreneurial journey. He describes this idea as “alignment equals velocity.” Understanding your experiences can help you recognize what drives you and move forward with greater purpose.
Learn From People Playing at a Higher Level
Brandon credits his parents with teaching him several lessons that shaped his approach to life. His father encouraged him to compete against people who were better than him. Losing against stronger competition created opportunities to improve. He also taught Brandon that rejection was nothing to fear because the worst answer someone could give was no. Meanwhile, his mother demonstrated the importance of going above and beyond when creating experiences for other people.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
🔥 Why losing to stronger competition can help you grow faster.
🔥 How going above and beyond creates memorable experiences for people.
🔥 Why getting aligned with your past can create forward momentum.
🔥 How writing a book can get you into rooms where business happens.
🔥 How the hook, irresistible offer, and no-oriented question can create valuable connections.
How a Book Opened Important Doors
Brandon published Leverage: Escape the College Rat Race. Design the Life You Want and Take the Real World by Storm when he was 20. The book gave him an immediate credibility point. He secured endorsements from Kevin Harrington and Noodles & Company founder Aaron Kennedy. Later, Brandon used the authority created by his book when reaching out to entrepreneur Jonathan Levi. That connection eventually led to Brandon running marketing for Jonathan’s company for three years.
Getting Into the Right Rooms
That relationship created another major opportunity. Brandon represented Jonathan’s company at Genius Network, a high-level entrepreneurial mastermind. At only 22, he entered a room filled with seven-, eight-, and nine-figure entrepreneurs. Brandon credits his book as a major part of the authority that helped him build those connections. His experience shows why publishing is only the beginning. Authors must deliberately use their books to start conversations and unlock new opportunities.
The Magic Connection Method
Brandon developed a three-part framework for reaching influential people. The first step is the hook. Rather than beginning by talking about yourself, show genuine interest in the other person. Mention something specific about their work or explain how their advice helped you. The second step is an irresistible offer. Look for a meaningful way to provide value while minimizing the other person’s risk, time, and effort.
Make It Easier to Respond
The final step is what Brandon calls the no-oriented question. Instead of pushing someone toward an immediate yes, structure the question so they can comfortably say no. This can reduce pressure and make responding easier. The goal of the first message is not to close a deal. It is simply to receive a response and open the door to a genuine conversation. Brandon also emphasizes follow-up because many valuable connections develop only after several thoughtful attempts.
Lead With Value and Build Real Relationships
The foundation behind Brandon’s strategy is simple: provide value without immediately expecting something in return. A book, podcast, or other platform can give entrepreneurs a reason to connect with people they respect. However, the relationship should come first. When you combine credibility with research, generosity, and thoughtful follow-up, your book can become much more than a published product. It can become a tool for entering new rooms, developing relationships, and creating opportunities that support a larger mission.
