The Single Most Important Question That You Need to Ask Yourself

Way back when, I used to run a financial services company.

And it was going great! We made millions of dollars and the company was a success, at least monetarily speaking.

But it was also a highly-regulated industry.

I remember one incident with the Department of Regulation down in Florida. They came knocking on our door and asked to look at our files.

They go through everything and they pick out six that they want to take away with them…

And they just take them!

There was no call ahead or warning that they needed this stuff. They just took it.

It all worked out fine because we’d done everything above board. But it was at that moment that I asked myself the question that every business owner needs to ask themselves…

The Question You Need to Ask

That question is a simple one…

Is what I’m doing leading to the most impact for my time?

Now, when I talk about impact here, I’m not just talking about making money. When you ask yourself this question, you’ve got to look at every aspect of your business.

Now at the time of this little governmental checkup, I’d already established myself as a bestselling author. And I had a ton of people asking me to reveal my secrets and show them how to achieve what I’d achieved.

The gears in my head started turning.

I asked myself the key question that I’ve just shared. And that led to me asking myself if helping others to write bestsellers would be a more rewarding use of my time.

Maybe you’re in a similar situation right now.

Perhaps you’re in a business that has given you pause for thought. You’re successful, at least when it comes to money. But something doesn’t quite feel right and you’ve got a few new ideas floating around in your head.

The trick now is to figure out if any of those ideas will actually work for you.

Use the E3 Method

The E3 Method is something that I use to help me to figure out if a venture is worth my time.

It’s pretty simple stuff too.

It’s basically just a Venn Diagram with three circles that overlap in the middle. And each of those circles covers a different aspect of the venture you’re thinking about:

1. Is this something that I’m going to really enjoy doing, both now and in the future?
2. Do I excel at this thing? This means you’ve got to be better than good at it. You need to have a gift for it.
3. Is this something that will earn money for my family and my company?

If you can answer yes to all three of those questions, you’ve found a venture that’s worth your time.

Are You Making the Best Use of Your Time?

Go back and ask yourself the question I posed at the top of the article:

Is what I’m doing leading to the most impact for my time?

Apply the E3 Method and you might just find that it isn’t. And if that’s the case, it may be time for you to make a change.
